Joyce M. Granfors

JOYCE MCNULTY GRANFORS, age 86, passed away peacefully at home with her four favorite daughters at her bedside, beloved wife of the late Ernst, Sweet and Lovable mother of the late Marc, Julie Kiefer (Greg), Lisa, Katie, and Megan Nodge (David).  Fun Loving grandma of Erika, Tim and Christina Kiefer, and Patrick Granfors.  Devoted daughter of the late Philip and Irene McNulty, Dear sister of the late Phyllis, Don, Adele, John, Kathleen and her living brothers, Ed and Pat. Joyful sister-in-law, aunt and friend to many.

Joyce was raised in Parma on Thornton Drive. She attended Lourdes Academy and went to many reunions over the years with her friends. Her childhood friends knew her as Mac,...but never call her BIG Mac! She worked at the Chesapeake Railroad as a secretary. She met her husband and love of her life on a cruise to Europe and had five children, becoming a homemaker. After all the children were in school, she resumed secretarial work. She did different paper routes over the years for the Cleveland Plain Dealer and also served as a school crossing guard…but not just ANY crossing guard, she was known and loved by many as a singing school crossing guard. You may have known her as a lady in your golf league, bridge league or on your bowling team, a participant in the senior olympics, or in the pool at water aerobics. She was honored to be selected the “Woman of the Year” from the Our Lady of Angels Guild. Joyce was devoted to God, so many of you said the Rosary with her or saw her at daily mass (at a number of churches, as she was a “roamin’ Catholic.”) She was a minister of Communion at both Our Lady of Angels and St. Therese. Her daughters knew her as a beautiful, loving mother who was always there for them. She was playful and fun when they were little and just as fun and full of life when they grew up. She was ready at the drop of a hat to go to any event, game or to come over for or go out to dinner. She loved going on vacations with the whole family and was delighted to be invited everywhere. Her summer place was her beloved Apple Valley where she made many lifelong friends. One of her greatest joys was being a grandma. She was a wonderful babysitter, planning nothing on the days her grandchildren were with her, so she was available for walks, trips to the library, the park or just around the neighborhood. Most recently, she was a wonderful foster grandmother to the Jackson boys. She will be missed, but will always live in our hearts. The family would like to extend special appreciation to her caregivers from the Hospice of Western Reserve and suggest donations in her memory to Hospice of the Western Reserve~ PO Box 72101, Cleveland OH 44192 donate@hospicewr.org. Paul C. Roth

Paul Charles Roth, born in Norwalk, Ohio, November 13, 1942, died early Tuesday morning in his home in Cleveland.  He was in the arms of his wife of 57 years, Jeanie, and surrounded by their six children, Rich, Jim, Marie, Kathy, Pete, and Dave, and grandsons Paul and Matthew.

Paul was a graduate of St. Paul’s High School in Norwalk where he played basketball. On the court, his long arms and legs earned him the nickname “Spider.” He graduated from Tiffin University with a B.A. in Business Administration.

Paul and Jeanie planted themselves in Cleveland’s West Park neighborhood where their family continues to grow and thrive.  For over 40 years their home was a place where only strangers would think to knock.  Everyone else; cousins, neighbors, friends, and kids from the neighborhood knew to just let themselves in. It is a large home made too small by the number of people who love them and who could find love, generosity, laughter, and an open fridge.

Paul made his living as a salesman and later as an independent contractor painting homes throughout West Park, but his life was his family. He and Jeanie worked together to teach their children a deep and abiding faith in the Church. He taught his children how to take pride in whatever work they do, to give generously of themselves to family, friends, and community, and how to sweep the kitchen floor PROPERLY.

He invested himself in the prosperity and joy of his children.  Every year he took his family to a cottage at Chautauqua Lake, NY, a place where they could have fun, bond as brothers and sisters, make memories, and play games late into the night. He passed on his and Jeanie’s Catholic faith to their children putting them all through Catholic school. He encouraged his children to pursue their passions and interests and to complete their educations. He died knowing he’d succeeded in his life’s work; all of his children still close to each other, happy in their work, and following his example with loving spouses and families of their own.

He is survived by his loving wife Jeanie (ne. Gerhart); his older brother Donald; his son Richard, wife Linda, children Alison and Paul; his son James, wife Cathryn sons Robert, Nicholas, Charles and Philip; his daughter Marie Houghtling, husband Eric, children John Paul, Mark, Erin, and Julia; his daughter Kathryn Smith, husband Brian, children Angela and Matthew, son Peter, wife Olivia; son David, wife Kathleen, baby daughter Bridget Aoife; and countless nieces, nephews, and friends of his children who knew him and loved him like a second father.

In death he returns to the loving embrace of his father Richard and mother Florence (ne. Brengartner). He is back in the company of his brothers Robert and Charles whom he loved and missed very much. He is finally returned to his grandson Douglas, son of James and Catheryn, who left our family too early.

Visitation will be at Donlon Funeral Home 15408 Triskett Rd, Cleveland, OH 44111, Friday from 4:00 – 8:00. Funeral mass at Our Lady of Angels Church, Saturday at 11:30 am.  Interment at Alger Cemetery.

Judge Richard M. Markus

April 16, 1930 - November 24, 2021

Richard Markus passed away suddenly on November 24, 2021. He is
survived by his beloved spouse of 69 years, Carol Slater Markus; his
children, Linda (spouse Walter Daniels) of Durham, North Carolina,
Scott (partner Kim Nadel) of San Diego, California, and Kent (spouse
Susan Gilles) of Columbus, Ohio; his grandchildren: Katrina, Slater,
Robinson, Etheridge and Austin; and his brother Tom Markus (La Jolla).
His brother Professor Lawrence Markus (deceased, wife Lois, daughter
Sylvia) resided in Minnesota. He is also survived by two nieces:
Connie Oliver (Greensboro, Georgia) and Christine Priday (Plain City,
Ohio), and two nephews Dale Sorchy (Wooster, Ohio) and Lindsey Markus
(Philadelphia).
Richard graduated from Northwestern University with many honors in
math and debate. He loved NU, where he met his wife and he remained
loyal to NU’s losing football. He next attended Harvard Law School,
where he served as an editor of Harvard Law Review and paid his
tuition as the debate coach for MIT. After receiving his law degree,
he was selected by Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren for the first
honors program (now in its 66th year) at the Department of Justice. He
then moved to Cleveland, where he practiced law for 20 years, leaving
to become a common pleas court judge. He left the bench to become a
professor at Harvard Law School. Shortly thereafter the Ohio governor
offered him an appointment to the Ohio Court of Appeals, which
provided him an opportunity to pursue his two legal passions: judging
and teaching. At the Court of Appeals he had a schedule which
permitted him to teach at a course at CWRU and later adding a course
at CSU law school. He was a terrible politician and disliked that part
of being a judge, which after two terms resulted in his return to
legal practice at Porter Wright, working in Cleveland and Naples. He
resigned to take a non-political position as a visiting judge (serving
in 66 Ohio counties), which he did until his 85th birthday.
Richard was also active with professional organizations, serving as
the youngest president of the American Trial Lawyers Association,
president of the Ohio State Bar Association, an active member of the
Lawyer-Pilot Bar Association, co-founder and faculty of the National
Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA), headquartered in Colorado, a
faculty member teaching new judges at the National Judicial College in
Nevada. For 40 years he authored the Ohio Trial Practice, a 1000-page
book which is the handbook for Ohio attorneys on evidence and civil
procedure.
Richard received far too many awards to mention all of them, but he
was especially happy with his receipt of the Ohio Bar Medal, Lutheran
Metro Ministry Peacemaker Award, Northwestern University Alumni Merit
Award, and Ohio State Bar Foundation Distinguished Government
Leadership Award.
Richard had active community involvement, including as a trustee for
Fairview Hospital and the general counsel for Lutheran Metro
Ministries. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church (Fairview),
and previously Messiah Lutheran Church (Lyndhurst). He enjoyed bridge
and travel with his wife to 89 countries.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the LLM Men’s Homeless
Shelter at Lutheran Metro Ministries 4514 Superior Avenue, Cleveland,
Ohio 44103; Cleveland Rape Crisis Center PO Box 933431, Cleveland OH
44193; or the Ohio State Bar Foundation:

held at a later time.
