Geraldine Payne

Geraldine Marie Payne (Gerry), age 95 passed away on March 10, 2019. Born on Februsry 18th, 1924, she grew up near E.116th and Miles Ave on Cleveland’s eastside in a multigenerational home. She later moved to the westside near Fairview Hospital where she worked until her retirement.

Gerry was av avid traveler even before she worked as a travel agent, visiting Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, Canada and California when Disneyland first opened. Gerry also loved playing the piano and was an accompanist for the Independence children’s chorus in the late 1950’s and for the Sweet Adelinesin in the 1970’s.

No celebration of Gerry would be complete without acknowledging her role as favorite aunt and cousin. Gerry was a prankster and family get-togethers in Twin Lakes with her great aunt Nellie Hawkins and the Gleason cousins always had an element of mischief. For her nieces and nephews, weekends in the Miles Ave house were an adventure away from parental supervision: staying up late to watch TV, snaks like potato chips and pop, after dinner ice cream trips, exploring the 4 story house and 3 barns.

Gerry was preceded in death by her parents Clifford and Colletta (Nugent) Payne, brothers Clifford A. Payne(Kathryn) and Finley B. Payne (Lillian) and a nephew Gary Robert Payne. Gerry is survived by 5 nieces and nephews, 8 great nieces and nephews and 16 great-nieces and nephews.

John Leslie Scofield

Born February 24, 1928 and died November 29, 2018 at Crestmont Nursing Home.John Scofield born in Lakewood Hospital and grew up on Cook Ave. He lived his whole life in the city of Lakewood. After graduating from Lakewood High School he went to work for the city of Lakewood. He began work on December 27, 1948 as a draftsman-clerk and by July 1, 1968 was appointed Superintendent of the Division of Water. He retired on January 10, 1986. . . that's 37 years for those who don't want to do the math. John met his wife at church camp 1946. They were married August 26, 1950, and he received his draft notice while on his honeymoon. While he served as a Marine at Cherry Point, NC, he taught navigation, his most famous student was Ted Williams. After the Korean War was over he was honorably discharged October 1953 and returned to Lakewood to work for the city again. After retiring, John and Jeannette became snowbirds going to Arizona from Thanksgiving thru the following May, for 25 years. First pulling a trailer with the car, moved up to a truck and bigger trailer and finally found a home RV park and had a park model with an Arizona room. The first time they each had their own bathrooms and air-conditioning. John's favorite activities were ping-pong and square dancing. He attended Lakewood Christian Church, was a Boy Scout and then a leader for Troop 4. He enjoyed camping, woodworking (even building a Sunfish sail boat from scratch, in the dining room because it was too big to come up the basement stairs). He also was an active member of Kiwanis for 50 years.John attended Baldwin-Wallace College while working a full time job, with four children, graduating 1963 with a Bachelor of Science degree. John was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Jane Scofield. His grandchildren Michael, Matthew Krysi (Scotty) Jones, Neil (Jen) Scofield, Heather Doerschuk and Jacob (Kelsee) Doerschuk, and Great grandchildren Jackson, Brayden, Bennett, Hunter, Bella and Gabby.
